Critical Thinking is . . . .

. . .the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action.

Critical Thinking Student Learning Outcomes

St. Philip's College students will demonstrate the ability to:

  • pose vital questions and identify problems, formulating them clearly and precisely
  • gather relevant information and interpret it effectively
  • impartially consider alternative systemsof thought, recognizing and assessing assumptions, implications, and practical consequences
  • develop well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, checking them against relevant criteria and standards
  • communicate effectively with others in determining solutions to complex problems

Adapted from Scriven and Paul's description of what a “well cultivated critical thinker” can do. Defining critical thinking: A draft statement for the National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking. http://www.criticalthinking.org/aboutCT/define_critical_thinking.cfm

SPC uses direct assessments to measure students' critical thinking skills as well as process assessment to continuously improve implementation.
