Railroad Operations
Are you considering an interesting career in railroad operations? Railroads are
vital to our economy—they operate around the clock 365 days a year. Railroad
operating department employees are rewarded with outstanding pay and benefits.
They must be mentally and physically prepared to perform challenging tasks at
any time in all weather conditions.
Consolidations, reductions in force, and reduced crew sizes have limited
openings for new hires in past years. Today, however, rail traffic is increasing
and many employees are nearing retirement. These circumstances indicate
tremendous opportunities in coming years.
There are three major rail carriers operating in Texas, as well as forty
regional, local and terminal railroads. Entry level positions exist in the
transportation, mechanical, and engineering departments of most railroads. Job
titles of entry level positions vary among companies and departments. For
example, an entry level transportation (train service) employee may be called a
trainperson or a conductor trainee. Entry level pay also varies with occupation
and company. Based on industry standards, individuals seeking employment in
these career fields are required to undergo drug testing prior to and during
their employment.
Competition is tough for entry level positions. A Certificate in Railroad
Operations from St. Philip’s College could give you an advantage over many other
applicants. It could also provide an excellent foundation of knowledge to help
you succeed. St. Philip's College offers Certificates of Completion in Railroad
Operations and Railroad Operations - Mechanical Option. These certificates
require 12-16 semester hours of railroad courses, 18-24 semester hours of
supporting courses, and a 2 semester hour practicum. Either of the certificate
programs can be completed in 1 year (3 semesters) at a very reasonable cost.
Please contact the Department Chairman, Mr. Rafael Brisita at 210-486-7294 for more information
about the St. Philip's College Railroad Operations Program.
