The Class of Nonviolence was developed by Colman McCarthy, founder of the Center for Teaching Peace in Washington, D.C. and is utilized on many campuses across the U.S. It uses classics in peace and justice literature to teach peacemaking and nonviolence. The course involves the reading of classic essays of notable peacemakers - Albert Schweitzer, Colman McCarthy, M.K. Gandhi, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King, Gene Sharp, Daniel Berrigan, Henry David Thoreau, Leo Tolstoy, Joan Baez, and others. Along with the readings there are in-depth discussions as well as experiential learning. The class will provide participants with the in-depth basics of peacemaking and nonviolence, a common language necessary for future development in this arena, and on-going resources. This is a 5-week diet and exercise program based on low glycemic index foods and gentle exercise, which will be followed with a Health and Diet Participant Support Group. The class will meet once a week for five weeks for 90 minutes. We will use a special computer software program to determine healthy weight, calories, and exercise requirement. This program will include education, motivation, and direction. Reduce your weight, blood pressure, insulin levels, coronary risks, and clothes size. Increase you health, energy, and self-esteem. Commit to 5 weeks of healthy eating and then make it a life long habit. Notes: We meet each Tuesday for 5 weeks.

New Employee Orientation (NEO) is a 1 1/2 day interactive session designed for all NVC new-hires. NEO acquaints new employees with the culture, values and organizational make-up of our campus; for full and part-time staff members, we recommend attendance within the first 60 days of employment at the college. All faculty are also welcomed to attend any part of the sessions or the full consecutive two days.

Acclaimed by educators for its new ideas and solid foundation in neuroscience, the program's proven techniques are easy to learn and help rekindle educators' motivation and energy. Drawing on the Institute of HeartMath's fifteen years of scientific research, this training engages educators through its timely, practical, research-based approach. Ask someone to recount a recent poor service experience and chances are they'll include the term "rude". What exactly constitutes rude behavior? Must it be intentional? This program explores the various types of rudeness according to the Rudeness Matrix and also raises awareness as to how one's actions can be perceived as rude. Humorous vignettes make this program a must-see training too.

We've offered the Low Glycemic Diet (or Dr. Troxler's Slow Starch Diet) and now we are looking at the psychological aspects of weight loss. There is much more to it than eating fewer calories and exercising. Stress, emotions, upbringing, and old beliefs can keep us stuck no matter how hard we try. This is a 5-week program that will address some of the areas that keep us from succeeding our health and wellness goals. Psychology of Weight Loss Agenda: Week 1. Overview and discussion of terminology, logs, reasons why we can't get rid of weight Week 2. Stress reduction and weight loss using HeartMath Week 3. Wipe out old thoughts and emotions using TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique) Week 4. Discussing the effects of negative emotions and guided imagery/hypnosis that gets rid of one bad habit Week 5. Mindless vs. mindful eating and wrap-up Notes: FIRST MEETING IN CCC 203. Remaining 4 weeks in CCC 122.
